The Battle of Algiers

Regisseur Gillo Pontecorvo vertelt het heroïsche verhaal van de Algerijnse stadsguerrilla Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), die zich een weg naar onafhankelijkheid vocht. Het scenario is gebaseerd op de ervaringen van FLN-leider Yacef Saadi, die in de film zichzelf vertolkt.

Voor veel Algerijnen kreeg de film een iconische en emotionele betekenis, maar in Frankrijk werd hij jarenlang verboden. Toen Pontecorvo in Venetië de Gouden Leeuw ontving, leidde dat tot woede bij de Franse delegatie. De intensiteit van de film was niet alleen te danken aan het verhaal, maar ook aan de omstandigheden: tijdens de productie was de grens tussen fictie en realiteit vaak flinterdun. Een veelbesproken vraag: waren de tanks die in beeld kwamen onderdeel van de set, of een echte coup die zich buiten afspeelde?De film inspireerde revolutionaire bewegingen zoals de Black Panthers en de Palestijnse bevrijdingsstrijd, maar trok tegelijk de aandacht van het Pentagon als studieobject voor stedelijke oorlogsvoering. Zelden liet cinema zo duidelijk zien dat film zowel een wapen als een spiegel van de geschiedenis kan zijn.

Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, it tells the heroic story of the Algerian urban guerrilla Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), fighting its way to independence. The screenplay was based on the experiences of FLN leader Yacef Saadi, who plays himself in the film.

For many Algerians, the film became iconic and deeply emotional, while in France it was banned for years. When Pontecorvo was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice, the French delegation reacted with outrage. The film’s intensity came not only from its story, but also from its circumstances: during production, the line between fiction and reality was razor-thin. A much-discussed question: were the tanks on screen props, or part of an actual coup unfolding outside?

The influence of La bataille d’Algiers reached far beyond Algeria. It became a source of inspiration for revolutionary movements such as the Black Panthers and the Palestinian struggle, while at the same time attracting the interest of the Pentagon as a study in urban warfare. Rarely has cinema shown so powerfully that film can be both a weapon and a mirror of history.
