Al Massir (Destiny), presented in collaboration with Studio Arabesquo. Al Massir is the final Youssef Chahine-masterpiece we will be screening as part of our Egyptian classics series.
In his film, director Chahine emphasizes that Western civilizations are interlinked and have drawn from the same sources of philosophy, thus advocating for tolerance in all areas. He does this in an infectious mix of drama, comedy and musical.
ABOUT THE MOVIE
Set in the 12th century in Andalusia (medieval Córdoba, modern Spain) a liberal philosopher known as Averroes (Ibn Rushd ), grapples with fanatical ideas from a fundamentalist Islamic sect. Averroes faces political persecution from the Caliph, a former friend. Meanwhile, an extremist religious group recruits al-Mansur’s youngest son, adding tension to a complex tale of ideological clashes and shifting allegiances in a multicultural society under Arab rule.
